The Sea is a Hungry Dog

2012

Film, super 8

17 minutes

‘The Sea is a Hungry Dog’ explores local experiences of weather, landscape and coastal change on the North Norfolk coast. Through archive footage and interviews with local residents, the film documents the impact of the weather on both the landscape and the everyday lives of those who live there.

Sophie Utting was commissioned by the Sainsbury Centre as part of the Crown Estate’s Art and the Sea programme to make a work of art that could contribute to the understanding of coastal change and necessarily involved local people. Her proposal was to make a film, shot using super 8 and hand developed by the artist.
