Painted panel

Description:
A pierced panel, with narrow border of black over-painted with yellow, white and red stripes. The four corners are carved as hornbills with yellow bodies and white bills, tails and legs. The eyes are painted as white, red and black concentric circles. At the centre of the panel the design may be seen as a face in black with details in white, yellow and red. The face is flanked by two black birds with the details in white and red. Below the mouth is a 'mandala' design

Context:
The panel depicts aspects of the spirit world, possibly to do with creation myth. The corner birds are probably hornbills, while the central ones are cassowaries. The central motif may represent female genitalia, probably to suggest ideas of birth and gene
