Making bricks and scratching ready-made bricks with local rural words

In January 2010, the Culture of the Countryside team held a community response and planning meeting which related to the outreach World Art objects. A group of 30 people, including local representatives, were stimulated to reflect upon traditional brick skills, the heritage of buildings and the presence of a brick pit in the locality. Artist Bryony Graham developed these ideas further into a dynamic and creative collaborative piece. This piece began at a free family skills and making weekend in early June, with contributors participating in a process led art work, which included elements of creating new brick moulds, making bricks and scratching into ready made bricks, using a growing collection of local rural words. We would like to acknowledge WHCollier’s generous contributions of materials and expertise in facilitating this piece and the experiences which led to it’s creation.
